How to count points in Hearts?

Hearts is a card game for 3 to 6 players where the goal is to accumulate the FEWEST points possible. At the end of each round, each player counts the penalty cards they took in their tricks. The game combines strategy and luck, as you must avoid hearts while managing the risk of taking the dreaded Queen of Spades.

  • Each heart taken in a trick = 1 penalty point (13 hearts = 13 points max)
  • Queen of Spades = 13 penalty points (the most dangerous card)
  • Maximum score per round = 26 points (13 hearts + Queen of Spades)
  • Shoot the Moon: taking ALL hearts + the Queen = 0 points for you, 26 for each opponent
  • Game ends when a player reaches 100 points (configurable in Scorio)

How does QuickTap work in Scorio?

QuickTap is Scorio's signature interface for Hearts. Instead of counting cards manually, simply tap on the card icons. The interface displays all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades. For each player, tap the cards they took — the score is calculated instantly. It is much faster and more reliable than mental counting, especially when multiple players have taken hearts.

What is Shoot the Moon in Hearts?

Shoot the Moon is the most spectacular move in Hearts. A player who manages to take ALL hearts (13 cards) AND the Queen of Spades in the same round achieves a Shoot the Moon. Instead of scoring 26 penalty points, that player scores 0 and EACH opponent receives 26 points. Scorio automatically detects this situation: as soon as a player has all penalty cards, the app reverses the scores without you having to do anything.

How does a game of Hearts end?

The game ends when a player reaches or exceeds 100 penalty points. At that point, the player with the LOWEST score is declared the winner. Scorio displays the final ranking and the history of each round. The 100-point threshold is configurable — you can play to 50 or 150 points according to your preferences. The app alerts you when a player is approaching the threshold to add suspense to the final rounds.
