How to count points in Spades?

Spades is a strategic trick-taking game played in 2v2 teams where Spades is always trump. Before each round, each player bids the number of tricks they expect to win (their "bid"). The team must then win at least as many tricks as their combined bids. Scorio handles all the calculation automatically, including bag penalties.

  • Contract fulfilled: 10 points per bid trick (e.g.: bid 4 = 40 points if successful)
  • Excess tricks: 1 point per trick beyond the bid (called a "bag")
  • Sandbagging penalty: -100 points every 10 accumulated bags
  • Failed contract: loss of 10 points per bid trick (e.g.: bid 4, take 3 = -40 points)
  • Game to 501 points (configurable)

What is a Nil bid in Spades?

The Nil bid is a bold wager where a player bids that they will take NO tricks in the round. It is a high-risk, high-reward play. If the player succeeds (0 tricks taken), their team earns 100 bonus points. If they fail (take at least 1 trick), their team loses 100 points. There is also the Blind Nil (bid before seeing your cards) which is worth even more. Scorio handles both types of Nil bids automatically.

How do bags work?

Bags are tricks won beyond the team's bid. For example, if your team bids 7 tricks and wins 9, you receive 2 bags. Each bag is worth 1 point, which seems positive, but beware: it is a trap! Once your team accumulates 10 bags in total (across multiple rounds), they suffer a -100 point penalty and the bag counter resets to zero. Scorio tracks bags automatically and warns you when you are approaching 10.

How does a game of Spades end?

The game ends when a team reaches 501 points (threshold configurable). The team with the highest score wins. Scorio displays each team's score in real time with the 501-point target clearly indicated. At the end, a complete history is available: each round with bids, tricks taken, accumulated bags and points scored.

What is a bag in Spades?
A bag is a trick won beyond your team's bid. Each bag is worth 1 point, but every 10 accumulated bags (across multiple rounds), a -100 point penalty is applied. It is the classic Spades trap — winning too many tricks can be worse than losing them.
How much is a successful Nil bid worth?
A successful Nil bid earns +100 points for the team. If it fails (the player takes at least 1 trick), the team loses 100 points. Blind Nil (bid before seeing your cards) is worth even more in some variants.
Can you play without bag penalties?
The bag system is part of the official Spades rules. In Scorio, it is enabled by default but you can configure the rules to match your preferences.
Is the Spades counter free?
Yes, all Spades scoring features are 100% free in Scorio, including bid management, bags and Nil bids.
